This post is in celebration of National Caribbean American Heritage Month. That was a mouthful. Anyways, I often get asked what spices and herbs to use to get that Caribbean flavor when cooking. When done right all ten on the list are guaranteed to make your taste buds whistle. So without any further ado, here are my top favorites that are an absolute staple in my kitchen.
.) Scotch Bonnet Peppers ----Each one has its own level of heat. Use the seeds if you want it to be extra spicy.
.) Garlic -- Health benefits plus it tastes amazing; I add it to almost everything.
.) Scallions / Green Onions ---Always a good idea. Add it to practically any dish for a serious
flavor boost.
.) Pimento ---This adds a tremendous amount of flavor. Be sure to crush them before adding them to your pot to avoid the accidental chew.
.) Thyme --- A little goes a long way; a must for authentic Jamaican Rice & Peas
.) Curry Powder ---Curry chickpeas, curry chicken, curry cauliflower; possibilities are endless.
.) Peppermint ---Calming and soothing plus Jamaicans believe this tea is a sure cure for so many different ailments.
.) Bell Peppers --Mild, crunchy and adds beautiful color to your meal
.) Ginger -- Really enjoy this tea; add it to any dish to give it a kick.
.) Coconut Milk ---Goes well with curry or jazz up some white rice by adding it.
